 Original 'My Granola' Poster - 1976 |
1-800-GRANOLA.com ... is the passion and foresight of company founder and president Saul Wilner, M.G.B., with (above left) daughter and Chief Loving Officer, Leah A. Wilner and (above right) son and Chief Inspiration Officer Isaac S. Wilner.
In 1971 Saul started baking his famous brand My Granola is Nuts (above right) in his parent's kitchen in Bayside, NY. The aroma filled the neighborhood and friends who stopped by to join in the mixing and baking process were rewarded with the freshest granola direct from the oven.
After taking over the dining room and kitchen with bags of rolled oats and cases of nuts and raisins, Saul's mother suggested it was time to leave ... and find a new production facility.
Saul then approached his friend Dominick Ortiz who owned and operated the Quantum Leap Natural Foods restaurant. Soon 'My Granola' was been prepared and baked at night after the restaurant closed. As business grew Saul needed still larger quarters. He then moved the entire operation to a 7,000 sq. ft. facitlity in Jamiaca, NY where for the next 12 years My Granola was produced to service the growing metropolitan New York area natural food markets.
During this time Saul added several new flavors of granola, including ... My Apple Raisin 'N Spice Granola (Marsha's favorite), Coco Crunch Granola and Carob Crunch Granola. Customers were able to get their 'Special' orders filled including a health food store that only wanted orange juice as the sweetener. Other flavors and variations of sweetened, unsweetened and low fat granola were ordered by specialty food stores, coops, restaurants, hotels, Inns & B&B's and ice cream and frozen yogurt stores.
In 1976, a fortuitous meeting with the co-owner of a small (but destined for nationwide growth) frozen yogurt shop on lower Broadway in the Wall St. area of Manhattan gave My Granola an entry into the toppings industry. The frozen yogurt store was called ... Everything Yogurt ... and both businesses grew, as did the friendship between Saul and Everything Yogurt co-founder, Stephen Beninati.
In 1991, while watching former New York Yankee great Phil Rizzuto doing his now famous TV commercial for a mortgage company and it's revolutionary new vanity 800 phone number (remember the number ... 1-800-LOAN YES), Saul was once again 'market inspired' and soon obtained 1-800-GRANOLA (472-6652) ... destined to become the One Stop Granola Shopping Solution for people throughout the United States and worldwide.
In 1993, the musician Sting sponsored a benefit concert at New York's Carnegie Hall to Help Save The World's Rain Forests. Coincidently,at the same time Saul was promoting a Save The Forest Granola and contributing a percent of the proceeds to that effort. Saul & Steve (Beninati) conceived their wildest promotion to date ... they decided to set up a table inside the lobby of Carnegie Hall and, well, see what happened. They needed a company 'spokesperson' and ... enrolled the services of ... Dr. Granola™.
With the best of intentions (and a little luck), Saul, Steve and Dr. Granola™ set up their table as the high society of the music world descended upon Carnegie Hall. With humor and determination they promoted the first ever Top It Off With Granola World Tour ... and a splendid, and unforgetable, time was had by all.
Over the years, whether as a cereal, snack, topping (on ice cream and frozen yogurt), part of a trail mix or a natural baking additive ... Saul has introduced granola and granola products (granola bars, cookies, breads, etc) into many different markets. Today, granola has earned its rightful place as a healthy staple in our daily diets.
